Perhaps the biggest problem we officers face in jail each day is the inmates being able to get their hands on drugs. When the inmates are under the influence, not only do the behave irrationally, they can put us officers at risk. One inmate that may be able to be controlled by two officers may now need a half-dozen or more. This is a very dangerous situation and possess a risk to officers and inmates alike.
My job as an officer of the jail is monitoring the drug traffic, and it can be brought into the jail a number of ways. Although a corrupt officer could be on the take, it was not the case in our jail. My first course of action is to monitor the visitors to the jails. Many of the visitors will put their own life at risk to be able to help the inmates to get their hands on drugs. Although I have been able to find decent amounts through inspections at the jail entrance, it was a fraction of the amount circulating in the jail.
Next, I monitor the inmate phone system and listen carefully for information on how the drugs are being brought into our facility. Even though I have a decent success rate, it was not until we update our system and Securus Technologies trained us on the new system, did we see our biggest success to date. I was learning the LBS software and discovered that I could easily spot instances where an inmate was talking to a family member about getting heroin into the jail.
With the help of this new technology, I can now spot tell-tale signs when drugs are coming in, and it has dropped our success rate of nabbing huge drug deliveries to over 75% this month alone.
